I-9 Process for Employees

The I-9 verification process is a federally required process and must be completed by all employees to legally work in the U.S. Any DU employee that does not complete this by their THIRD DAY of employment will be terminated until this process is complete. Please find detailed instructions for completing this process below.

I-9 Required Documentation

All identification documents for new employees must be uploaded in HireRight or shown to us in-person after their background check is complete. The documentation must NOT be expired and in its original form (no photocopies):

  • Either one document from List A or one document from List B and one document from List C are considered acceptable I-9 documents. These lists are provided in the Resources section below.
  • For more detailed instructions, follow the manual or the PowerPoint slides found in the Resources section below.
  • USCIS: For more information on I-9 Verifications, please go to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services website at http://www.uscis.gov/i-9.
  • NOTE: If your documentation is stored somewhere else or with family, you must have it mailed to you for our staff to verify before you can complete I-9 Sections 1 and 2.

I-9 Verification Process

All new employees at the University of Denver, including faculty, staff and student employees, are required by law to complete these steps on or before their first day of employment:

I-9 Form Section 1

  • Enter personal information and upload required documentation through HireRight after background check is complete.

I-9 Form Section 2

  • Virtual or in-person verification of your required documentation by Employment Services or your supervisor.
  • Any employee that does not complete this will not be able to start work until their verification has been completed. (This is separate from the I-9 Section 1 form which is completed through HireRight.)
  • Please provide the acceptable documentation (i.e. Passport, State Driver’s License, Social Security Card, etc.) If you have questions about the I-9 verification process or the acceptable documents please reach out to Employment Services.
  • If you are a returning employee, who has completed an I-9 verification before, you may need to re-verify. Please reach out to the Employment Services Team to confirm your I-9 verification status.

2. Hiring Managers can review documents

  • Reach out to your hiring manager to see if they can review I-9 section 2. Most hiring managers have training for this process.

3. In-person drop in hours

  • Days: Monday - Wednesday 10:00am-2:00pm MST
  • Location: Mary Reed Building, 4th Floor
  • Address: 2199 S. University Blvd. Denver, CO 80208
    • (This building is historic and not fully ADA accessible, please schedule a virtual appointment if possible or reach out to Employment Services for accommodations).
